S is for Symbolism

I’ve recently had a run of really interesting pet/wildlife commissions. Keeps me out of mischief during Lockdown! I’m always interested in the clients vision for their art, whether it be their desire for a more contemporary piece with a neutral background or perhaps something more traditional incorporating a realistic environment.

My last commission saw the client sending me 5 different images of a very cute dog they wanted painting to gift to a supportive family member as a ‘thank-you’. The pictures she sent me were quite diverse…some taken in the home and some in the landscape, some close up facial shots and some full-bodied shots. The two most striking shots showed the dog sat in front of a mirror under a brick archway, with bricks also reflected in the mirror making it a heavily patterned piece. The other noticeable shot showed the dog sat on a hill in the Lake District.

I instantly started thinking about replacing the reflection in the mirror with the landscape and did a mock-up using PhotoShop to show the client. She liked the idea and I requested more shots of the Lakes to show different options before starting the painting. The resulting piece shows the dog sat in front of the Lakes at dawn or dusk. I love it! I love that the painting not only captures the beloved pet but also captures a place of special significance to the family. I am always happy to discuss any and all ideas for commissions. I find it makes for truly unique and inspiring artworks!
