Wow it’s June! Despite the days and weeks feeling longer whilst living in lockdown I still can’t believe it’s the start of Summer. It’s raining today as well after the warmest UK Spring on record…go figure!
As well as missing all the usual weekend social events with friends and family, I’ve missed so many birthdays over the last few months. May is the birthday month of my sister and mum (2 days apart). My mum’s always easy to buy for so I supported local and bought her a big bouquet of flowers. However, I was perplexed over what to get my sister. She’s never really one for wanting ‘stuff’ but also she has a substantial amount of my art in her house so I wondered if another painting was too much!
I eventually decided on a family portrait of my sister, her husband and her two children. I had a short gap in commissions and thought I might enjoy the challenge of doing people for a change. I did study life drawing at Uni and have continued over the years doing occasional classes (just for fun and practice). It was still a shock to me though how different and difficult painting skin tones and clothing patterns/textures was. Animals are definitely my preference but I did enjoy producing a personal gift for my sister and especially loved studying my gorgeous niece and nephew – most certainly the toughest part of lockdown has been staying away from them!
