Four years ago, I was delighted to produce a book cover for ‘Ruby and the Moon Children’ by author, Lindsay Walter. Children have always loved my artworks, and as Art teacher, this fills me with joy. It was therefore an absolute pleasure to design, draw and paint pieces for a children’s book.
Lindsay got back in touch recently and asked me to produce chapter illustrations and a book cover for her second novel ‘Ruby and the ghosts’, due for release later this year. What an honour! The brief this time was especially exciting and challenging: a supernatural and fierce red lion jumping through a stained glass window. As is always the challenge for an artist, I could picture the scene immediately but working out the sequence for painting, including techniques and colours, required quite a bit of thought. I love this aspect of art… problem-solving and creative planning. Such an important skill-set gained from art education.
The above image shows the final painting submitted to the publishers for print. I hope you enjoy it. Lindsay is a magical author and a lovely person, her stories are full of adventure and humour. If you have youngsters in the family, I hope you will grab a copy of ‘Ruby and the ghosts’ when it comes out.
